Parenting styles


Parenting styles are vitally important to a children’s behavior. The type of parent that you are, and the way that you discipline, will certainly influence your children’s behavior. Parenting styles are techniques that parents use to take care of their children.

Every grandmother and grandfather will tell you hilarious stories of their children when they were first born. And for every funny and touching story they have, they will be able to tell you another for every hardship they encountered. Parenting Styles is something that is done in many different ways by each parent.

  • Some parenting styles are more effective than others are. Parenting styles differ from family to family, and may even vary from day to day within one family. All parents take decisions for their children that may be stricter or more indulgent on occasion. The following is four general styles employed by parents.

Authoritarian Parenting Styles:

Authoritarian Parenting StyleAuthoritarian parents rule on just that: authority. Authoritarian parents, however, also expect their children to accept their judgments, values, and goals without questioning. Commands are given to children that they must follow regardless of the circumstances. If these commands are not followed, harsh punishment will ensue.

Authoritarian parenting style is just as its name suggests. It is a parent using their status, age and power to rule with authority. This type of parenting holds high regard for achievement, leaving children with no room to make mistakes.

Often, this style of parents are devoid of love and affection that are, in fact, very crucial in the psychological and emotional development of young children.

Authoritarian parents believe in giving punishment:

Although authoritarian parents generally have good intentions, and want to teach their children to grow up to be good people they attempt to do so by using tools such as harsh punishment and shame.

Attachment parenting is a natural response to know your baby and develop your own unique and sensitive parenting style. Attachment parenting also called natural parenting or instinctive parenting is an approach to parenting that has been practiced widely for thousands of years.

There has recently been a renewed interest in this approach to parenting in Western societies.

  • Attachment parenting means understanding what the infant’s needs are, when they arise and being flexible in devising ways to respond appropriately. In short, it is about loving and trusting our children. If we can do that, they will be able to trust us and in turn, trust others and be trustworthy persons themselves.

It was initiated by renowned pediatrician, Dr. William Sears, together with his spouse, Martha – a term that describes a very responsive and nurturing style of raising a child.

In Creative Parenting, William Sears defines attachment parenting as “an uninterrupted, nurturing relationship, specifically attuned to a child’s needs as he passes from one developmental stage to the next.”

Active parenting is all about taking care of children. There are many aspects that require care and attention while giving a brought-up for children. Beginning from the stage of infant till the stage of young and energetic adult, each phase of childhood carries a great significance and importance.
